Rogers Rangers

Rogers Rangers were formed in the early stages of the French and Indian War (1754-1762). Robert Rogers commanded a company of New Hampshire militia, who were experienced in fighting the Natives in the heavy woods of New England. Their proficiency drew the attention of British Army leadership and Rogers was promoted to Major and tasked to raise six companies of “rangers”.
Known as Rogers Rangers, these companies fought mainly in upstate NY, conducting raids on enemy troops, conducting reconnaissance on enemy forts.

The Rangers fighting was considered unconventional (“fighting the Indian way”) at the time, but the British could not debate the results. Rogers was tasked to write a manual on the Ranger style of fighting. This led to the creation of Major Rogers 28 Rules of Ranging. These principles are still very relevant to modern day infantry, Rangers and special operations.
